Damon placed my bags in the back of Alejandro’s SUV. Emily was already in the vehicle, fast asleep, unaware that she was being moved once again for our safety. Sometime during the night, Damon had gone back home and packed us some clothes. I’d been so tired that I hadn’t even realized he’d left.

I just hated that Damon couldn’t come with us. I hated it so much. I couldn’t stand being apart from him now that I’d finally found him again.

He walked over to me and cupped my face in his hands, leaning down to cover my lips with his. “Whatever orders Alejandro’s men give you, follow them,” he told me. I nodded at him. “They are there to keep you and our daughter safe.”

“I know,” I whispered, trying to keep myself from crying. Once I left here and headed towards the border, everything would hang in the balance. There was no guarantee that I would see Damon again.

“Hey, don’t go there,” Damon softly ordered. I hadn’t realized I’d closed my eyes, but I snapped them back open, locking them on his dark ones again. He brushed his thumbs over my cheekbones. “Once this is all over, I promise I will come get you myself.”

My bottom lip trembled, tears welling up in my eyes. “Please don’t make me promises that you’re unsure if you’ll keep,” I begged him.

His lips twitched in amusement. I glowered at him. How could he be amused right now?

“Darlin’, I think you’re forgetting who I am and what I’m capable of.”

I shook my head, gripping his leather cut in my fists. “I’m not forgetting,” I whispered. “But you also don’t know what you and everyone else will be riding into.”

He shrugged. “I make smart moves, darlin’.” He brushed his nose with mine. “Don’t worry too much.”

I wanted to scoff. “Kind of hard,” I mumbled.

He hooked his index finger under my chin and tilted my head back to look up at him. “I need you to be my strong girl, Cass. Can you do that for me? Emily can sense when you’re stressed. I need you to just focus on being her amazing mother and not a damn thing else, you hear me?”

Swallowing thickly, I nodded. He drew me into his arms and buried his face in my hair. I clung tightly to him, trying my damnest to hold in my tears. I wanted to be strong for him, to prove to him that I wasn’t weak.

“I love you,” he told me. My heart clenched. “Communication with me will be nonexistent while I’m dealing with this, but you’ll know the moment it’s all over; I promise.”

I nodded, squeezing my eyes shut to hold in my tears. He leaned down and took my lips captive, kissing me like a man starved. Then, he stepped back from me, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans.

“Go,” he said hoarsely. “I love you,” he repeated.

“I love you, too,” I croaked.

One of Alejandro’s men gently grabbed my shoulder and turned me away from Damon, leading me over to the SUV.
